Choice and Freedom: How Poetry Became My Pathway to Healing

When I first stumbled upon poetry, it wasn’t during some grand literary moment, but out of the simple need to make sense of my inner world. Evenings between 6 and 11 PM—often the hardest hours—became my quiet sanctuary for healing. When everything felt chaotic, poetry was where I found something rare and vital: choice. And with that choice, came a powerful sense of freedom.
Writing poetry isn’t about crafting something perfect. It’s about giving yourself space to express, to question, and to heal. On the page, I could choose which thoughts to set free and which feelings to hold close. That permission—to choose, to experiment, and even to make mistakes—became foundational to my recovery and well-being.
The beautiful thing about using poetry as medicine is that it doesn't require you to have all the answers. Instead, it asks you simply to show up as you are. Each word I wrote helped undo old narratives and made space for new ones—a process that felt like both relief and release.
Through poetry, I found freedom:
Freedom to be honest about my feelings
Freedom to rewrite the stories I’d told myself
Freedom to be messy, raw, and real
This blog is my invitation for you to experience how poetry can bring both choice and freedom, regardless of your background or writing experience. Words can be the medicine we need, especially when life feels overwhelming.

Poetry Prompt:
What’s one word you want to reclaim or reinvent for yourself? Write it down, let it be your starting point, and see what unfolds.
If you’re new to poetry as self-care or looking for fresh inspiration, I hope you’ll join me on this healing journey. Let each piece you write remind you that you, too, always have a choice—and that’s where freedom begins.
